The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) needed a composting system that is capable of meeting EPA 503 Regulations during the harsh cold and windy winter weather conditions of the Great Lakes region.

The SG Solution

Standing Up To 4 Seasons of Rigorous Testing

Sustainable Generation provided two SG Mobile™ Systems with GORE® Covers for the testing in order to analyze two different mix recipes simultaneously.  During the initial test, in the dead of winter, the results proved that EPA 503 Regulations would be met using the technology.  Next the demonstration project focused on testing various mix recipes to gather data to optimize the system throughput.  After four seasons of testing, the SG technology using GORE® Covers was proven to perform and provide the necessary results in the Chicago climate.

MWRD engaged the Greeley and Hansen Engineering Firm in 2016 to perform a technology evaluation for a full-scale Covered Aerated Static Pile (CASP) composting project. The SG Bunker™ System using GORE® Covers was chosen for the full-scale project at the Calumet Water Reclamation Plant. The SG team has been working with Greeley Hansen and MWRD in the design and construction of the facility.

Proven Capabilities in Preparation of Construction and Beyond

This project is in the design phase.  It is a 27 Bunker System with 6 weeks treatment time using the SG Bunker™ System with GORE® Covers for the active and maturation phases of composting followed by windrow turning using a turning machine to finish the production of Class A EQ Finished Compost.
